Jesus meets you right where you are.
Do you ever feel like you’re too “something” for God? I know I have at times felt like this. That I’m just too much for him to handle. I’m complicated. I’m the mama bear who is also entrepreneurial, sensitive, creative, fun loving, deep, sarcastic, loyal to a fault and very dramatic. Sometimes this combo just seems like it’s all too much for me to reconcile, but it’s not too much for Him. He knows us in a way that is far better than we even know ourselves, after all, He is the one who created us. In Luke 5 Jesus knew exactly how to get through to Peter. He knew his “soft spot”. Peter was a fisherman, a real man’s man, a bit of a hot head and a businessman. Jesus asked to borrow his fishing vessel used to make his living and then when he was done using it, he ordered Peter out to sea for a fishing expedition. Peter answered him in verse 5 “Master, Peter replied, “we’ve just come back from fishing all night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you insist, we’ll go out again and let down our nets because of your word.” I can only imagine that Peter was physically and mentally exhausted from fishing all night not to mention a little frustrated from not catching anything. Maybe his bank account was teetering on the scanty side. Then comes some man who claims to be the Son of God and tells him to try fishing again. Talk about a blow to his ego! But Peter did as Jesus asked and they caught so many fish that they had to get extra boats to haul them all in which, let’s be real, helped Peter’s bottom line as much as it helped his faith. Jesus knew how to show up for Peter. He met him at his need. He did it in a way that Peter could understand and see for himself; his bank account. He spoke Peter’s “language.” He wants to do the same for you and me. He knows how to get through to us. All we need to do is humble ourselves and ask. In Isaiah 55:8-9 it says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, declares the Lord." For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Sometimes we think God can’t figure us out, much less help us when we have problems or trials. But it’s important to remember that we can’t put Him in a box. He doesn’t use the same brain power that we do to figure things out. He is infinitely smarter and more creative than we could ever comprehend or be. That should give us confidence when we confide in Him with our problems, our troubles, our fears, our insecurities and our whole beings. We may not see a solution to what we are currently going through, but He does. He does miracles every single day. Have you seen any lately? Well, it starts with looking for them. If we limit Him before we even start then it’s pretty hard to see the miracle. It’s exercising our faith like Peter did and swallowing our pride to say, “But if you insist we will….”
